Pomeranian Dental Care

Pomeranians are prone to tooth loss and bacteria so good dental care is essential to their health.

Poms have very tiny mouths which can be problematic both in dental health and care. They are prom to tooth loss which isn’t a big problem in itself, but they also are prone to a buildup of bacteria which can break away from the mouth and cause health problems throughout the dogs entire system.

In order to make sure your Pomeranian enjoys the best health possible, you should take care to make sure that you provide him with the appropriate dental care. Brushing is a vital part of dog tooth care and should be done at least once a week. There are plenty of flavored toothpastes formulated for dogs that your Pomeranian will love the taste of. You can use a finger brush (a rubber piece that fits on the end of your finger with bristles), a hand held brush that looks much like a human tooth brush, or a little brush that fits on the end of a "ring" which you put on your finger. I have a tiny Pomeranian with a small mouth and I find the "ring" brush works best for me.

In addition to daily brushing, you should make sure your Pomeranian has a dental checkup once a year. Your vet can provide this and may recommend scaling if they see any buildup on the teeth. This can be done by your vet and is pretty much the same thing as the scaling you get at the dentist. The teeth are scraped and polished and any loose or badly damaged teeth are removed. Your dog is put under anesthesia for this procedure and it is quite costly. Proper brushing will limit the need for this to be done.

In addition to dental care, your Pomeranian will need daily grooming of the coat and periodic grooming of the eyes and nails.

Brushing your Pomeranian every day is a good way to bond with your pet as well as insure his coat is healthy and looks good. Poms have a double coat that can easily become matted so brushing is necessary. A once a week – or every couple of weeks – bath is a nice way to keep your Pom smelling and looking good! Don’t forget to groom around his paws and tail area as well as clip his nails.

Like most small dogs, Poms can have a buildup of discharge from their eyes that can cause a lumpy mess. This buildup can stain the fur and, although my Pom’s never said anything, I’m sure it must be uncomfortable. To avoid this mess, simply clean the eye area each day with a Q-tip. Be sure not to get too close to the eye as you don’t want to accidentally poke your pet in the eye!

Trimming the hair around your Pomeranins feet is necessary so they don't slide all over the place on the linoleum and hard wood floors! In addition, you should trim his nails, which does not have to be nearly as scary (for you or your dog) if you read our page on trimming your Poms nails.
