Thinking about a Pomeranian Adoption?
If you are thinking about a pomeranian adoption then you have several options.
First of all, you can look for one at your local animal rescue. You may not locate a Pom the odds of finding a Pom at the animal shelter are not good so, but you can let them know what you are looking for and hope for a call.
Finding a Pomeranian at an animal shelter is not likely so another option to find a pomeranian adoption is to look for one through a Pomeranian Rescue Service. Here you will be able to find a Pom that has been left homeless. Some of these Poms may have a few leftover “issues" from their previous life (but not all of them) and you might have to wait a while before one that fits your criteria comes up, but it is a terrific way to give a needy animal a loving home.
If it’s a puppy you want to buy, or you plan to show the dog, you might want to consider a Pomeranian Breeder. If you do plan to buy from a breeder, make sure you use one that has the good of the breed at heart and not just trying to make a quick buck.
Breed Standard
When you think about a pomeranian adoption, make sure you know about the breed standard.
The Pomeranian is a compact dog with a fox like face. The tail should be plume like - held high and draping over the back. Standard breed weight is 3 to 7 pounds. Demeanor is lively and alert. He has a double coat – a soft undercoat and long harsh outer. Face should include dark almond shaped eyes, small ears, a short muzzle and rounded skull with pronounced stop.
After you find your pomeranian adoption and get him home, make sure you provide him with the proper grooming so that he looks and feels good!
Pom Care
Pomeranians are easy to care for but do need some special attention. They can be easily groomed in less than 1 hour a day, but I am sure you will want to spend much more time than that bonding with your pet!
Teeth
It is important that your pet get good dental care. Pomeranians are prone to tooth loss and bacteria build up. If the bacteria is allowed to run unchecked, this can cause problems with your pets overall health. Luckily, maintaining good dental health is easy! Simply buy an enzymatic toothpaste that fights bacteria (your vet can recommend a good brand) and a small tooth brush (I use the one that has a loop that fits on my finger). Try to brush your dogs teeth every day. Have your vet do a dental exam once a year and scaling if necessary.
Fur
Brushing your Pomeranian every day is a good way to bond with your pet as well as insure his coat is healthy and looks good. Poms have a double coat that can easily become matted so brushing is necessary. A once a week – or every couple of weeks – bath is a nice way to keep your Pom smelling and looking good! Don’t forget to groom around his paws and tail area as well as clip his nails.
Eyes
Like most small dogs, Poms can have a buildup of discharge from their eyes that can cause a lumpy mess. This buildup can stain the fur and, although my Pom’s never said anything, I’m sure it must be uncomfortable. To avoid this mess, simply clean the eye area each day with a Q-tip. Be sure not to get too close to the eye as you don’t want to accidentally poke your pet in the eye!
