Is A Pomeranian Right For You?

Pomeranian’s, as with any breed, have certain needs so before you adopt one, you should make sure that you can provide a proper home for them.
In addition, you need to think about what your family is looking for in a dog and make sure a Pomeranian will fit the bill.

Here’s some things you should think about before you adopt a Pomeranian:

Your Space

Poms don’t need much space, but they do need to have an area of their own to retreat to when they want to take a nap or just be alone. You need to provide a little area where their dog bed or crate can stay. Preferably, this would be in a room where the family gathers but out of the way of traffic and disturbances. Although your Pom does need to go out to do his business you should not expect him to stay outside for any length of time. Pomeranians are indoor dogs and should not be kept out in the yard. They want to be inside watching TV with their “people”!

Your Routine

You need to think about how much you are home and when you will be able to let your Pom out to do his business or simply to take him for a walk. While they don’t need a lot of exercise, a little walk every day is a nice way to bond with your dog and give him something fun to do. Poms are sociable dogs and will get lonely if you are not home much. If you are prone to working late nights and frequent business trips your this could be a problem and your Pomeranian could develop some bad habits due to loneliness. Than again, most dogs would so if you are not home much, perhaps you should reconsider getting a dog of any type.

Your Family

Do you have small children or plan on having them in the near future? Although Poms are good with kids, it’s important to remember that your pom is very small and fragile and children can sometimes be rough with dogs. Make sure you will be able to supervise if your pom will be around kids.

As Always, do your homework. Talk to friends, vets, dog breeders, and trainers to find out which breed is best for you.
