Traveling With Your Pomeranian
Traveling with your Pomeranian can be fun for both you and your dog. Pomeranians, being so small are easy to take along on trips and there are even many little carry cases that you can put you Pom in and that double as tote bags! But what you are traveling with your Pom, you need to consider his needs and make sure that wherever you’re going has the appropriate accommodations for your pet.
Here’s some things to consider when traveling with your pet Pomeranian:
1. Make sure your Palm has a clean bill of health before you start out on your adventure. Be sure that his immunizations are up to date and you have a valid rabies certificate that you can bring along with you should there be any question.
2. While you probably like to sit with your Palm in your lap there are probably times when you leave the carrier to secure your dog so that he doesn’t get injured. If you are traveling on a plane you want to call ahead and make sure what kind of carriers are approved by the airline. In some cases small pets like your Pomeranian can fly under your seat. No matter what carrier you choose, be sure that it is sturdy and will keep your pet inside.
3. Don’t forget that your Pomeranian needs ventilation to keep them cooled off. Whether you are traveling an airplane, a car or train be sure that your Pom is not stuffed into an enclosed area. Opening the windows when traveling by car will get some air circulating and help your Pom enjoy the trip even more.
4. Keep your Pomeranian safe in the car is important. Dogs love to hang their head out the window but what if your Pom fell out? If you got into an accident your Pom could be seriously injured or could run away in the confusion. Think about getting a dog restraint seat that will keep your Palm sitting high enough to look out the windows but keep him safe during normal travel or in case of an accident.
5. Never leave your Pomeranian in the car unattended especially in all weather when the sun is beating down. Do I even need to tell you this? Heatstroke can be very serious for dogs so to leave your dog walk to the car for even a few minutes is unacceptable.
6. Never leave your dog unattended anywhere as he could be kidnapped! Pomeranians can be expensive and not everyone is nice 3-D to be sure you’re watching your pet at all times. Of course, you would never let your Pom run loose as he could get into any number of dangerous this way.
7. When traveling with your Pomeranian keep a careful watch on his health and if you see him panting rapidly or his eyes or gums turn red or purple or he seems to be feverish, is vomiting or sick in any other way get them to vet as quick as possible. Place cool towels on him and let him rest comfortably while you were looking for the nearest clinic.
8. If you plan on taking your Pomeranian to another country make sure you know what the rules are. In many cases you cannot take your dog directly from one country to another and he must be in quarantine for some amount of time. Be sure you know about these rules ahead of time to avoid any confusion.
9. Make sure your Pomeranian has a caller with an ID tag listing your name and cell phone number on it. This way If you become separated during your travels anyone who finds it will be able to contact you.
10. Make a special first aid kit for your Pomeranian that includes a medicine that you might give him, flea and tick powder, travel sickness pills and anything else you and your vet can think of to add to it. A styptic pen and some bandages are good to have on hand in case your Pom cuts himself.
11. Make sure you bring a dog food and his favorite treats on the trip as well as clean dishes, some toys, his harness and leash, a brush, and his pooper scooper. In essence you’ll need to pack like you do with a baby and bring all your dog supplies and foods along for the trip.
12. when traveling make sure your dog gets enough chances to go to the bathroom - every two or three hours and it be considerate of others and pick up any mess he leaves behind.
Traveling with your Pomeranian can be a fun experience and with the appropriate planning it’s easy to take your Pom along anywhere you want to go!
