Rid Your Pomeranian Of Fleas
Pomeranians are generally indoor dogs and typically don’t have a big problem with fleas. However on occasion flea infestation can set in - it doesn’t take much before your house is home to a colony of fleas and both you and your Pomeranian are seen constantly scratching.
Below are some ways both natural and chemical to help combat flea infestation:
Natural
1. Make sure to vacuum your home often in seal the vacuum bags in a plastic Ziploc bag and dispose of them as soon as you can.
2. Wash your Pomeranians bedding in warm soapy water at least weekly. You’ll find that the bedding is where the fleas hang out and breed so even if you get rid of the fleas on your dog they’ll still be more in the bedding that then jump back on your dog starting the cycle all over again.
3. Bathe your Pomeranians every week with a mild shampoo.
4. Cedar can be a flea repellent so you might try cedar shampoo and use a dog bed with cedar chips or put some cedar oil in your Poms bedding.
5. Fleas like dry skin so you want to be sure that your Pomeranian is well moisturized. You can use a special moisturizer when you shampoo and also try some linatone oil mixed in with your dogs food.
6. Try feeding your Pomeranian a mixture of garlic and brewers yeast (in small doses) - you can actually find this in tablets or powder at the store. This will cause your dog to exude a certain odor that fleas do not like.
7. Another natural flea repellent is Pennyroyal. you can use this in your carpets to try to get rid of the fleas that have nested there. Be careful around your Pomeranian and also around small children though as this herb can be toxic.
8. Another herbal flea repellent consists of 2.8 L of rock salt mixed with 60 ml of lavender oil place this mixture out in a container or use it as a wash on your dog.
9. And where does your Pomeranian get fleas? Well out In the yard of course! Try planting marigolds as these tend to repel fleas.
10. Try boiling some lemon peel orange peel and then soaking your dogs bedding and it for a few hours. Remember to wash the bedding afterwards. You can also let the solution cool down a little bit and use it as a wash for your little Pomeranian.
11. If you’re Pomeranian just has a mild flea infestation than try filling up the sink with some lukewarm water and a little bit of shampoo set your dog in for 15 minutes and then rinse.
While treating fleas naturally is best for your household in your palm, it may not work if the infestation is significant. In this case you may have to turn to the chemical or commercial methods described below:
1. Advantage is poisonous to fleas and works by being applied to dogs skin where it stays active for aboutt a month killing off any fleas that one make your dog their home. The active ingredient imidacloprid damages the fleas nervous system which causes them to die. This is not absorbed into your dog’s body and is said to be quite safe. It works pretty good and will read your dog of fleas in under a week.
2. Frontline is another product that is rubbed onto your pet skin. the difference between this and advantage is that frontline Is not water-soluble and therefore needs alcohol to be washed off. This will we tell fleas for up to four months and is safe for Pomeranians even puppies. the active ingredient for Fipronil interrupts transmission of the nervous system killing both fleas and ticks. It is proven to kill all fleas within 24 hours in text as soon as they attach themselves to the host. Some dogs may be allergic, so you may want to find out first from your veterinarian how to tell if It is safe for your Pomeranian.
3. Biospot is also topical application which kills about three quarters of the fleas eggs and ticks on your dog. It can also repel mosquitoes and works for about a month. It may temporarily turn your Pomeranians white here to yellow and beware that this is not good for cats.
4. Proban and Prospot are absorbed into the bloodstream and poison the fleas when they bite your Pom. In my opinion this is not the best solution as you are injecting poison into your little dog and who knows what the side effects may be? Of course it requires the flea to bite the dog so if your Pomeranian has a flea allergy and this would not be a good solution.
Fleas love the warm weather and can be found mostly during the summer but I have often found that when the weather turns cool the fleas don’t like it so much outside and are more active in the house. So the best time to treat your house is at the end of summer to make it inhospitable for fleas to move in.
