Why You Should Keep Your Pomeranian Slim And Trim
Just like people, dogs can become obese if they overeat and just like in people, being overweight can have serious health complications for your dog.
Here are some reasons to keep your Pomeranian slim and trim for a long happy life:
1. Arthritis
overweight dogs can more easily develop arthritis and your Pomeranian is no exception. In addition, the extra weight might also initiate the development of other diseases that have to do with the muscles and joints such as hip dysphasia, spinal disc disease and problems with joint ligaments.
2. Diabetes
Did you know that dogs can get diabetes? Being overweight can cause some types of diabetes in humans and this can also happen with dogs. Just like in humans the more fat your Pomeranian hands the more insulin will be generated. This leads to insulin resistance which may bring on diabetes.
3. Capacity to tolerate heat
If your furry Pomeranian is too fat, he may not be able to tolerate the heat which can be bad for his help especially in the summertime. This is due to the buildup of fat under the skin and actually many obese dogs are prone to heat stroke in the warmer weather.
4. Respiratory problems - heart diseases
Just like in humans, obese dogs can be prone to heart disease and respiratory problems. One reason for this is that the chest cavity is covered with fat deposits and when the dog breeds the lungs cannot expand as much. In extreme cases the lungs and heart can produce enough oxygen for the dog.
5. Gastrointestinal problems
Some of these dogs have problems with the pancreas in their intestines which can cause an inflamed pancreas. This is very painful for your Pomeranian they can actually lead to death.
6. Liver problems
Having too many facts and your diet can cause a strain on your Pomeranians liver which can cause illness and your dog and may even kill him.
So How Do You Keep Your Pomeranians Weight Down?
If your Pomeranian is anythingng like mine, he’ll eat pretty much anything you give him and in large amounts to. So the first thing you could do is make sure that you feed him a good quality food and just enough for his daily caloric needs.
Another thing is to be sure that your Pomeranian gets enough exercise. Just because your dog a small does not mean that he doesn’t want to go out for walks and scheduling a daily walk and sticking to that every day will not only be good exercise for your dog but also for you. Scheduling playtime with other dogs can also help your Pom burn some calories.
Just like you take care of your body by eating right and exercising and keeping your weight down, you should also take care of your Pomeranian this way you’ll have a long-lived healthy companion for many years.
