Breeding Your Pomeranian

The decision to breed your Pomeranian is not something that should be taken lightly as these tiny dogs often have problems when giving birth. However, if you have regular veterinary care you should be able to breed your Pom with minimal risk. After all, who doesn’t want a little carbon copy of this we Pomeranian?

If you do decide to breed your Pomeranian you’ll need to pick a suitable father. You want to be sure that he comes from a good line and that he doesn’t have any shadows on his medical history. Also make sure he is tested for infectious diseases shortly before the dogs are bred.

Also, be aware that breeding a dog will have added responsibilities and probably expenses to ensure the health of the mother and the pups. In addition, this can be stressful for your Pomeranian and you! Be aware that poms often have only a couple of puppies in a litter and sometimes puppies do die during the process or shortly thereafter. You’ll need to consider this especially if you have young children as it can be rather traumatic.

Of course you will need regular vet visits to check the health of your Pomeranian and you should invest in a whelping balks or at least have some large clean cardboard boxes ready for the special day. Heat lamps and thermometers are good to have on hand as well as a ton of clean towels. Of course, you’ll want to watch your Pom closely as she gets close to giving birth and be sure you have your vet emergency number on hand just in case.

Once the puppies are born your Poms motherly instincts will take over and she will care for them for the first couple of weeks without any interference from you. Keep a watchful eye however as a new mother may have some problems and you may need to step in. The mother will feed them wash some and make sure they stay safe. Be sure that your Pomeranian has access to go outside whenever she needs to and be aware that her regular schedule for going to the bathroom might be disrupted during this time.

Keeping the area where the puppies are clean is important and you most likely use every newspaper you have as well is probably most of your neighbors. of course, you want to have comfy blankets for your precious little Pomeranian and her pups but be prepared to do a lot of laundry!

Infection and hypothermia or one of the leading causes of death for puppies so you want to be sure that you get them to the vet as recommended and also that they are kept warm. You can use heat lamps if it is during a cold season in your house is not very warm. 75 to 80° is a comfortable temperature for puppies.

Be prepared to make caring for your Pomeranian her puppies almost a full-time job as they will be keeping you up at night barking, eating and pooping. Puppies poop a lot so you probably spend a lot of time cleaning the area. It’s important to keep it clean as they waste can lead to infection which can very serious and even deadly for puppies.

When it’s time, you’ll need to take the puppies to that and make sure they get their first round of shots. Once you bonded with them, of course it’s time to find them a home in less you plan on keeping all of them. So don’t get too attached because you might be sending them off for a new family once they are around eight weeks old.
