The Pomeranian
The Pomeranian is a tiny ball of fluff - sweet and
loving and eager to please!
Well suited for apartment living, this little dog is vivacious and
energetic, but does not need a lot of outdoor activity. Weighing in at
between 3 and 7 pounds this little dog with the fox like face, bright
eyes and and ready smile is sure to steal your heart! Don't spoil hiim
too much, though or you will find that your perfect little pooch has
turned into a demanding shrew!
Like most small dogs, the Pomeranian does have
some specail care needs and requires firm training and discipline.
Proper grooming should take about an hour a day with more time once a
week spent on bathing and clipping nails. If cared for properly, your
Pom can live upwards of 15 years.
Pomeranian Care and Grooming
Pom’s have a double coat that requires
daily care as it can easily get matted. The soft undercoat is light and
fluffy and very thick. The longer top coat is sleek like long hair.
Daily brushing is required to keep the fur free from matting and
looking it's best. Weekly baths should be given as well as proper
grooming around the feet and under the tail.
Like most small dogs, Poms can have a buildup of
discharge from their eyes that can cause a lumpy mess. This buildup can
stain the fur and, although my Pom’s never said anything,
I’m sure it must be uncomfortable. To avoid this mess, simply
clean the eye area each day with a Q-tip. Be sure not to get too close
to the eye as you don’t want to accidentally poke your pet in
the eye!
Good dental care is vital for your Pomeranian.
These dogs are prone to tooth loss and excess bacteria in the mouth
which can be harmful to your dogs health. The best way to fight this is
to get an enzymatic toothpaste that will help fight bacteria and brush
your dogs teeth every day. Get a dental check up once a year and a
scaling if your vet recommends it.
Pomeranian History
The Pomeranians we know today weigh in at around 5
pounds, but they once weighed around 35 pounds and were at home in the
arctic circle!
These vivacious lap dogs get their name from the
province “Pomerania” which was located where
Eastern Germany is now. Originally brought to England in the
1700’s, by Prince George III’s new bride, this
larger version of the toy dog would not become popular until the late
1800’s when Queen Victoria who brought home a 12 pound Pom
from Italy.
It didn’t take long for Pomeranians to become a favorite lap
dog and breeders worked at making the breed even smaller until they
reached an average of 5 pounds as the dog is today.
Pomeranians have long and illustrious history.
Michelangelo had a pet Pom that used to sit on a silk pillow and watch
as he painted the Sistine chapel. The great church leader Martin Luther
favored these toy dogs and mentioned them often in his work. Even
Mozart had a pet Pom that he dedicated an aria to!
